Efforts are moving forward to revamp the Laurel Little Theatre, enhancing the experience for performers and audiences alike. Constructed in 1927 and converted into a theatre in the early 1970s, this venue has a rich history that the community hopes to preserve and elevate.
Christy Liverett, the Board President, recounted that numerous theaters once thrived in Laurel, including the Arabian and Strand cinemas. However, the Laurel Little Theatre, which was the last to close its doors, has become the focal point for revitalization efforts.
The initiative began with the “Raise the Roof Capital Campaign” in 2008, aimed at expanding the venue by utilizing the space where the former Pinehurst Hotel once stood. This hotel had a historical connection to the theatre, featuring a side door for patrons.
In addition to the expansion, the project also addresses essential renovations. Liverett pointed out that areas such as storage, dressing rooms, and restrooms require modernization. The existing plumbing is still from the original construction, indicating a significant need for improvement.
Bringing back the fundraiser highlights the theatre’s dedication to not only maintaining its rich legacy but also expanding its offerings. The vision includes hosting concerts, ballet performances, and various cultural acts, broadening the theatre’s appeal beyond the local community.
As of now, the Laurel Little Theatre has reached 25 percent of its financial goal for the project. This revitalization stands as a beacon of hope for the local arts community, promising to enhance cultural engagement in Laurel.
For those interested in contributing to this exciting project, donation opportunities are available.
In summary, the revitalization of the Laurel Little Theatre not only aims to preserve an important piece of cultural heritage but also seeks to enrich the community’s artistic landscape, generating hope for a vibrant future in the performing arts.
