Revamping the Kennett-Oxford Bypass: Major Upgrades on the Horizon!

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is actively working on several projects aimed at reconstructing the Kennett-Oxford Bypass, a vital 22.5-mile limited access highway designated as U.S. 1. This route links the Pennsylvania/Maryland state line in West Nottingham Township with Schoolhouse Road in East Marlborough Township, Chester County.

The planned improvements for the roadway include comprehensive reconstruction of the existing pavement, minor widening of shoulders, replacement of guide rails, enhancements to drainage systems, and the installation of new stormwater management facilities. There is also significant work proposed for bridges along the corridor, which includes either rehabilitating or replacing sixteen mainline bridges, nineteen overpass bridges, and seven culverts. To ensure adequate vertical clearance over the bypass, the mainline pavement will either be lowered or the intersecting roads raised at each overpass.

Improvements to traffic operations are also a priority, involving the extension of acceleration and deceleration lanes at entrance and exit ramps, better intersection controls at ramp terminal intersections, and the introduction of intelligent transportation systems such as CCTV cameras and Dynamic Message Signs.

Additional roadway enhancements will be made at intersecting roads including Sylmar Rd, Ridge Rd, PA 272, PA 472, PA 10, PA 896, PA 796, PA 841, PA 41, Newark Rd, and PA 82. These improvements will accommodate turning lanes and adjustments to road profiles at interchanges. Furthermore, upgrades are planned for the intersections at Chatham Road (PA 841) & E. Evergreen St and E. Evergreen St (PA 841) & Oakland Ave in West Grove Borough, focusing on better traffic signalization or the implementation of roundabouts.

In addition to roadway enhancements, these projects will align with local trail initiatives, potentially integrating trail improvements in specific areas, as outlined in Chester County’s Southern Chester County Circuit Trail Feasibility Study.

The entire corridor has been divided into four sections to facilitate effective design and construction planning.

This reconstruction project not only aims to improve traffic flow and safety but also to enhance the overall functionality and aesthetic of the area, creating a better commuting experience for all users. The coordination with local trail initiatives signifies a commitment to fostering community connectivity and promoting eco-friendly transportation options. As these plans unfold, they promise to usher in a new era of improved infrastructure and accessibility for residents and travelers alike.
