Revamping Akron: Major Renovation Plans for Cascade Parking Deck Unveiled

Akron, Ohio, Sept. 30, 2024 — Akron Mayor Shammas Malik is set to present legislation to the city council for a contract to design renovations for the Cascade Parking Deck in downtown Akron. Back in February, the Ohio House of Representatives approved $2.5 million for the project, which was matched by an equal amount from the State Senate, totaling $5 million for the Cascade Plaza renovation. The design phase, estimated at $400,000, will be funded by this state allocation.

Mayor Malik emphasized the importance of this project for the redevelopment of downtown, stating, “Improving the deck is a significant investment into the heart of our downtown which is crucial to the experience and accessibility of this corridor. These improvements will allow us to continue supporting residential, retail, and commercial growth and density downtown.” He expressed gratitude to community partners and legislators for their backing of this vital investment.

The renovation plans include repairing structural columns, patching concrete surfaces, replacing stairs and railings, enhancing lighting, addressing accessibility issues, and improving wayfinding and signage. Additional efforts will also focus on fixing leaks in the pedestrian tunnel beneath N. Main St. and enhancing drainage and waterproofing in the renovated areas.

The design process is expected to take around 10 weeks, with construction aiming to commence in Summer 2025.
