After a 17-year absence, the Fiji Awards for Media Excellence made a notable comeback last night, reenergizing the local media community. Rosi Doviverata, the Acting Publisher of the Fiji Sun and President of the Fiji Media Association, delivered a heartfelt address, highlighting the unwavering dedication of journalists in Fiji despite the lengthy pause in these awards.
Doviverata conveyed that the revival of the awards goes beyond recognition; it signifies a “return of confidence, pride, and excellence” within the country’s media professionals. Reflecting on the developments in Fiji’s media landscape from 2007 to 2025, she expressed that “we did not break, we got better,” emphasizing the resilience shown by the industry.
She lauded key media organizations for their achievements and tenacity in the face of various challenges, including political and financial hurdles. Notably, she praised the FBC for its efforts in elevating sports broadcasting to a national level, recognized the Fiji Times for its steadfast dedication to independent journalism, and acknowledged Fiji Television’s historic contributions despite commercial pressures.
Doviverata also recognized the technological advancements made by platforms like Fiji Live and Fiji Village, as well as the growth of the Fiji Sun print newspaper, stating these developments have significantly reshaped the media environment.
Celebrating the increasing representation of women in media leadership, Doviverata reflected on the recent success of the Women in Media Fiji national conference. She encouraged young female journalists by affirming, “To every young female journalist in the room, don’t wait for permission. You belong here. You can lead here. And your voice is needed here.” Her message serves as a source of empowerment, motivating emerging journalists to enhance their storytelling skills.
In concluding her remarks, she reiterated the essential role of journalism in society. Doviverata described journalism as more than just a profession, but a “public trust and a calling,” motivating attendees to engage in profound investigations and contribute to accountability in reporting. The return of the Fiji Awards for Media Excellence not only celebrates the media’s achievements but also inspires renewed confidence and ambition within the sector.
