Resilience on the Court: Marta Kostyuk’s Fight Beyond Tennis

Marta Kostyuk has emerged as an influential voice within the Ukrainian tennis community, showcasing her near-fluent English skills and open demeanor even at a young age of 19. She has candidly shared her experiences with post-traumatic stress disorder, illustrating the challenges of navigating the demands of professional tennis while grappling with the emotional toll of living in a war-affected country.

Kostyuk expressed the importance of sometimes disconnecting from news about the ongoing conflict. She remarked, “Sometimes I have to turn off the news completely. I may be in a safe place, in a safe environment. But my brain doesn’t know the difference.” This highlights the psychological impacts of prolonged exposure to distressing news, despite her physical safety. Balancing her professional responsibilities with her emotional health remains a priority, especially with her family still residing in Ukraine.

Reflecting on her visits to Ukraine, Kostyuk described the resilience of the local population in the face of devastation. “I’m always mesmerized when I come to Ukraine for whatever I have to do with my job there,” she noted, observing how businesses continue to operate amid adversity, with some stores displaying signs like “We are working. Just come in,” despite physical damage from attacks.

While Kostyuk maintains a glimmer of hope for a resolution to the conflict, she remains cautious in her expectations for others to follow the example of fellow tennis player Daria Kasatkina, who has shown support for her country and its people.

Kostyuk’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the strength and resilience required to thrive under such challenging circumstances, and it reflects the broader spirit of endurance among many in her homeland. Her ability to perform professionally while managing her mental health serves as an inspiration, encouraging others facing similar struggles to prioritize their well-being.
