Securing a dinner reservation in New York has become increasingly challenging, as the competition for seats at the city’s top restaurants has intensified over the past three years. Many food enthusiasts are facing hurdles that make it nearly impossible to get a table at trendy dining spots.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the reservation platform Sevenrooms, stated that certain restaurants have become almost unattainable. Despite efforts to gain insight from restaurateurs on how to secure reservations, many express uncertainty and admit they have no solutions to offer.

In response to the escalating difficulty of obtaining reservations, the New York state legislature recently voted to prohibit third-party booking sites such as Appointment Trader, which allowed users to resell dining slots at inflated prices, sometimes exceeding $200. This practice had started to resemble ticket scalping for concerts and sports events.

Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, praised the new legislation, calling it a significant win for the hospitality sector. She asserted that it would lessen reservation competition and offer better protection for restaurants against costly no-shows.

Nonetheless, the demand for unique and upscale experiences continues to surpass supply. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India noted the trend since the pandemic, emphasizing that nearly all travel and dining options are now fully booked. India observed a shift in dining trends, revealing that fewer clients are interested in traditional fine dining or lengthy tasting menus.
