Reservation Wars: The Battle for New York’s Hottest Tables

In New York, securing a reservation at popular dining spots has become increasingly difficult. Over the last three years, many food enthusiasts have found it almost impossible to get a seat at the city’s hottest restaurants.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the reservation platform Sevenrooms, noted the challenges faced by diners. He stated that even restaurateurs he has consulted have no tips to offer for getting reservations at their establishments.

The competitive nature of dinner reservations reached a boiling point last month when New York’s legislature voted to prohibit third-party booking sites like Appointment Trader, which allowed users to resell restaurant reservations for up to $200, similar to the resale market for concert and sports tickets.

Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the legislation as a significant victory for the hospitality industry, aimed at reducing reservation competition and shielding restaurants from costly cancellations.

Despite these legislative efforts, the surge in demand for trendy and upscale experiences has not diminished. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India noted that since the pandemic, it has become challenging to secure bookings across various hospitality sectors, with everything from planes to hotels filled to capacity.

India, who has spent 16 years managing Sienna Charles, a luxury concierge service for high-net-worth individuals, recognizes the difficulties in accessing popular dining venues. Her clientele often includes families with wealth exceeding $100 million.

She emphasizes that gaining access to sought-after restaurants relies on understanding customer preferences and establishing relationships with restaurant owners rather than simply a focus on fine dining, as many clients now favor trendy spots that offer unique experiences over traditional tasting menus.

India observes that the dining landscape has shifted, with many patrons motivated by the social media allure of posting their restaurant experiences, leading to a culture of “fear of missing out” (FOMO).
