Dining out in New York has become increasingly difficult, as securing a reservation at the city’s most sought-after restaurants has become almost impossible for many diners. Over the past three years, the challenge of booking a table has escalated significantly.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, shared insights on the matter, stating that some restaurants have become utterly inaccessible. He noted that even restaurant owners, who have participated in discussions about getting reservations, have admitted they lack effective strategies.

The situation has prompted legislative action, with the New York state legislature recently voting to ban third-party booking services like Appointment Trader. These platforms were known for allowing users to resell restaurant reservations for exorbitant prices, sometimes reaching $200 or more, a practice reminiscent of ticket scalping for concerts and sports events.

Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the new legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector. This move is expected to ease competition for reservations and help protect restaurants from costly cancellations.

Despite these legislative measures, the demand for trendy and upscale dining experiences continues to exceed supply. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India remarked on the post-COVID landscape, noting that nearly every aspect of travel and dining is fully booked, leading to increased challenges for securing reservations.
