Dining out in New York City has become increasingly challenging, with securing a reservation at the hottest restaurants now more difficult than ever. Over the past three years, getting a table at the city’s trendiest venues has shifted from being a tough task to nearly impossible for many aspiring diners.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, explained that certain restaurants have become nearly inaccessible. When asked for tips on gaining entry, restaurateurs admitted they didn’t have any solutions to offer.

The competitiveness of dinner reservations has prompted legislative action. Recently, the New York state legislature voted to prohibit third-party booking sites like Appointment Trader, which had allowed users to resell restaurant reservations for inflated prices of $200 and more, a practice reminiscent of ticket scalping for concerts and sports events.

Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the new law as a landmark achievement for the hospitality sector. She believes it will alleviate the competitive pressure on reservations and shield restaurants from costly cancellations.

Despite these efforts, the demand for trendy and luxurious dining experiences continues to exceed supply. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India noted that the post-COVID landscape has seen bookings for flights, restaurants, and hotels fill up rapidly.
