Fiji's Remote Hospital Goes Solar, Ensuring 24/7 Power

Remote Fiji hospital switches on solar power, delivering 24/7 care

The Lomaloma Subdivisional Hospital on Vanuabalavu has proudly introduced reliable electricity through a state-of-the-art solar power system, becoming a crucial resource for healthcare in one of Fiji’s most remote regions. This installation, recognized as the largest solar power project for any healthcare facility in Fiji, represents a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions.

The transition to solar energy, facilitated by CBS Power Solutions in partnership with the Biomedical team from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, ends the hospital’s reliance on diesel generators. By reducing the frequent power outages that have disrupted medical services, this project is expected to greatly enhance healthcare delivery. The installation process was initiated after comprehensive assessments were conducted earlier this year.

Dr. Krishan Prasad, the Acting Subdivisional Medical Officer, highlighted the critical importance of having a reliable 24-hour power supply, especially for emergencies that occur after dark. This new system will support the operation of oxygen concentrators during urgent situations, decreasing dependence on oxygen cylinders while also lowering carbon emissions linked to diesel fuel use.

Funding for this project has been secured through the Manaaki grant from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, under the Fiji Oxygen Program, with additional support from Cure Kids Fiji. As a result, both Lomaloma Hospital and nearby nursing stations are now equipped to provide efficient and life-saving healthcare powered entirely by renewable energy.

This development aligns with Fiji’s wider strategy to enhance energy access and healthcare infrastructure in remote communities. The successful deployment of renewable energy systems is vital to sustainable development initiatives, reflecting similar programs nationwide aimed at increasing the use of clean energy. With these ongoing enhancements, there is hope for a more resilient healthcare system that can effectively serve the needs of all Fijians, particularly those in underserved regions. This commitment to renewable energy not only addresses immediate healthcare challenges but also positions Fiji as a frontrunner in sustainable healthcare solutions within the region.
