Fiji Remembrance Day: Honoring the Quiet Heroes Behind the Uniform

Remembrance Day Fiji: Honoring Veterans and Their Families

More than 50 residents from Valelevu gathered at the Lomavata Methodist Church on Remembrance Day to honor Fiji’s military and police forces. This local observance allowed ex-servicemen and officers unable to attend the main ceremony in Labasa to pay their respects.

During the service, Dr. Rev Mosese Salusalu, a minister of the Methodist Church, spoke about the crucial role families play in supporting servicemen, particularly emphasizing the often-overlooked contributions of the wives who manage households and care for children while their partners serve abroad.

The solemnity of the occasion was highlighted with the sounding of the Last Post, a bugle call that honors those who have died in service. A touching moment came when Nisa Saqasaqa laid a wreath in memory of her late husband, ex-serviceman Iliesa Saqasaqa, who passed away in 2000, underscoring personal losses amidst the collective remembrance.

November 11 marks Remembrance Day across Commonwealth nations, a day dedicated to commemorating military personnel who have lost their lives since the end of the First World War, with additional reflections on sacrifices made during World War II, peacekeeping missions, and contemporary military operations.

This year’s event not only acknowledged the fallen but also strengthened community ties among those who have experienced loss and exhibited resilience. It serves as a poignant reminder of the lasting connections formed through the sacrifices made by service members and the steadfast support of their families.

Similar tributes across Fiji highlight a larger narrative of remembrance, showcasing the complex emotions of grief and pride families encounter while honoring their loved ones’ legacies. These heartfelt observances embody the spirit of resilience and hope that shape Fiji’s Remembrance Day celebrations, encouraging future generations to embrace the values of courage and dedication that safeguard their freedom and safety.
