A prominent figure in the world of netball, Unaisi Rokoura, tragically passed away in a drowning accident over the weekend, leaving a significant void in the Fijian sports community. Alumeci Sachs, president of the Suva Netball Association, remembered Rokoura as a woman of humility, excellence, and heart, whose passion for netball inspired players and coaches alike.
Sachs described working alongside Rokoura as a privilege and an inspiring experience. She noted that Rokoura’s commitment to sharing her knowledge and mentoring local coaches significantly contributed to enhancing the standards of netball in Fiji. “She will be remembered not just as one of Fiji’s finest coaches and mentors, but as a woman whose legacy lives on in every player and coach she inspired,” Sachs stated.
Rokoura was known for her calm and dignified presence, and her focus on elevating the coaching standards in Fiji. From 2007 to 2009, she collaborated with Sachs while coaching various teams, and her influence was evident during Sachs’ tenure as assistant coach for the World Youth U21 national netball team, where Rokoura served as a guiding figure. Sachs recalled Rokoura’s leadership qualities, humility, and deep understanding of the game, describing her as a beacon of guidance within the netball community.
In addition to her coaching role, Unaisi Rokoura notably captained the Fiji Pearls from 1997 to 2006, representing her country in six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships. Following her playing career, she transitioned into coaching and administration, leading the Fiji Pearls as head coach from 2009 to 2013 and again from 2022 to 2024. Her impact extended regionally as she also coached the Papua New Guinea Pepes from 2015 to 2017.
The news of Rokoura’s unfortunate passing has sparked a wave of tributes from across the sporting community, including Fiji Netball, which expressed deep sorrow over the loss of such a revered figure. The organization highlighted her remarkable achievements and the lasting legacy she leaves behind as a mentor and friend to many.
Rokoura’s civilian contributions and her vital role in fostering sportsmanship resonate remarkably among those who had the privilege to know her. Her tragic passing serves as a grim reminder of the need for increased awareness of water safety, prompting community leaders to advocate for heightened vigilance during recreational activities.
As the netball community comes together to mourn the loss of this extraordinary figure, they are also reminded of the values of mentorship, kindness, and perseverance she embodied throughout her life. Unaisi Rokoura’s spirit will continue to inspire athletes for years to come, leaving a legacy of dedication and a passion for the sport that will not be forgotten.
