Tony Slattery, the British actor and comedian celebrated for his improvisational talents on Channel 4’s “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” has passed away at the age of 65 due to a heart attack. The news was confirmed by his longtime partner, Mark Michael Hutchinson, who shared the heartbreaking announcement with the BBC.

Slattery, who was born on November 9, 1959, in Stonebridge, North London, began his career in theater while studying at the University of Cambridge. It was there he became involved with the Cambridge Footlights, a student sketch comedy group where he eventually served as president, alongside notable contemporaries including Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson.

His rise to fame began with the late-night show “Saturday Stayback” in 1983, but it was his role on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” from 1988 to 1995 that solidified his reputation as a talented comedian. He also appeared in films such as “The Crying Game,” “How to Get Ahead in Advertising,” and “Peter’s Friends.” Throughout the 1990s, he continued to contribute to television, taking part in various quiz shows and sitcoms.

Although Slattery faced a challenging decade filled with health issues after his time on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, he made a strong return to the screen in the mid-2000s, taking roles in “Bad Girls,” “Life Begins,” and even the long-running soap opera “Coronation Street.” His last significant television moments occurred in 2020 when he spoke openly about mental health struggles on BBC’s “Horizon.”

His death has prompted tributes from many, including Fry, who reflected on Slattery’s gentle nature and immense talent, expressing sorrow over his loss as Slattery was beginning to find joy and recognition again in his life.

Tony Slattery leaves behind his devoted partner, Mark Hutchinson, with whom he shared almost four decades. As the entertainment industry mourns his passing, many remember him not only for his comedic genius but also for his resilience in facing personal battles throughout his life. His legacy will surely continue to inspire both audiences and aspiring performers.
