Tony Slattery, the beloved British actor and comedian recognized for his improvisational talent on Channel 4’s iconic show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” has passed away at the age of 65. His longtime partner, Mark Michael Hutchinson, revealed that Slattery died following a heart attack on Tuesday morning.

Hutchinson expressed his sorrow in a statement to the BBC, noting Slattery’s passing occurred after he suffered a heart attack on Sunday evening. “It is with great sadness we must announce actor and comedian Tony Slattery, aged 65, has passed away today,” he said.

Best known for his role on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” from 1988 to 1995, Slattery gained fame through his quick wit and comedic improvisation alongside performers who crafted scenes based on audience suggestions. He also appeared in notable films such as “How to Get Ahead in Advertising” and “The Crying Game,” showcasing his versatile talent.

Born on November 9, 1959, in Stonebridge, North London, Slattery began his journey in the performing arts while studying at the University of Cambridge. He became a member of the renowned Cambridge Footlights comedy group, which included notables like Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. This period marked the beginning of a fruitful career that would span decades.

Slattery’s television career took off in the 1980s with appearances on shows like “Saturday Stayback” and later “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” He was a familiar face on various comedy panel shows and sitcoms through the ’90s. His career faced challenges due to health issues, but he made a comeback with roles in series like “Bad Girls” and “Coronation Street,” and he even participated in a reunion special of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” in 2011.

In recent years, Slattery bravely opened up about his mental health struggles, including addiction and bipolar disorder. His last public appearance was in 2020 on the BBC’s series “Horizon,” where he discussed his mental health journey.

Stephen Fry paid tribute to his old friend with a touching Instagram post, recalling Slattery’s kindness, talent, and humor. He remarked on the “cruel irony” of losing Slattery just as he began to find joy and renewed recognition in his work.

Tony Slattery is survived by his devoted partner, Mark Hutchinson, with whom he shared nearly 40 years of love and companionship. Although his passing is a great loss, Slattery leaves behind a rich legacy of laughter and creativity that touched many lives. His contributions to comedy and the arts will not be forgotten.
