In Memoriam: Quincy Jones, a Music Trailblazer and Garfield High School Alumnus

The music world mourns the loss of Quincy Jones, a legendary figure whose contributions have left an indelible mark on Seattle and its educational landscape. A proud graduate of Garfield High School from 1947 to 1950, he significantly enriched the school’s music and arts programs.

During his time at Garfield, Jones showcased his immense talent through various roles, participating in the Operetta, chorus, orchestra, and band. He also served as the student director of the swing band and Funfest, demonstrating early signs of the leadership and creativity that would define his illustrious career.

Even after relocating to pursue his exceptional journey in the entertainment industry, Jones maintained a strong connection to his roots. In a testament to his lasting impact, Garfield honored him in 2008 by naming its performing arts center after him. The same year, he received the first Lifetime Achievement Award during the inaugural gala of the Northwest African American Museum, recognizing his profound influence on arts and culture.

Today, through the Quincy Jones Performing Arts Center, students at Garfield continue to learn about Jones’ inspiring legacy. They not only celebrate his achievements but also engage in performances and programs that reflect his spirit, fostering the next generation of musicians and artists.
