Remembering Luther H. Peacock: A Legacy of Shipbuilding and Family Love

Luther H. Peacock, a devoted master shipbuilder and family man, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the age of 84, just two days before his 85th birthday. He was born in Wilson County to Alvin and Lela Peacock and grew up in Kenly, North Carolina, where he attended Buckhorn Elementary and Rock Ridge High School.

At 18, Luther relocated to Newport News, Virginia, where he began an impressive 63-year career at the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company. He graduated from the esteemed Apprentice School and served two years in the United States Army. After his military service, he returned to the shipyard and made significant contributions to submarine and aircraft carrier programs. His work included involvement in the design of the Los Angeles-class attack submarines and aircraft carrier development, showcasing his versatility in naval construction. Luther played a vital role in the design and construction of 53 naval vessels throughout his career, demonstrating his extensive expertise in the industry. His commitment earned him the title of Master Shipbuilder.

Luther is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 63 years, Marietha (Godwin), and his children, William Peacock from Newport News, VA, and Robert Peacock and his wife Linda from Selma, NC. He also leaves behind one grandson, Luke Peacock, of Gloucester, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Billy Ray Peacock and Janice Brown. At the age of 29, Luther embraced Christianity and became a second-generation member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, a denomination with historical roots in the early 20th-century religious revival in Los Angeles.

An enthusiastic sports fan, Luther participated in baseball and football during his time at the Apprentice School and was active in the Newport News Shipbuilding baseball and golf leagues. He supported teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Baltimore Colts, and the University of North Carolina. Golf was a cherished hobby, especially when enjoyed with family and friends, as well as during the Apprentice School Alumni golf tournament. Luther will be remembered for his unwavering faith, strong work ethic, kind-hearted nature, sense of humor, and steadfast support for family.

A graveside service is scheduled for September 30th at 11:00 a.m. at the Godwin Family Cemetery located at 537 Jerusalem Church Road, Kenly, North Carolina 27542. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the scholarship fund for the Newport News Apprentice School Foundation in honor of Luther H. Peacock.
