Actor John Amos, known for his roles in the iconic television series Roots and Good Times, has passed away at the age of 84. Amos portrayed James Evans, the stern but loving patriarch in Good Times, which debuted in 1974 and was among the first sitcoms to showcase a black family. His departure from the series after just three seasons was a result of disputes with the show’s white writers concerning the portrayal of characters. Amos later starred as the older Kunta Kinte in Roots, a significant drama that tells the story of an African man sold into slavery in America. His film credits included Die Hard 2, Coming to America, and Uncut Gems.
In addition to his film work, Amos made notable television appearances in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The West Wing, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, 30 Rock, and Two and a Half Men. His final performance is set to be featured in the upcoming series Suits LA.
Many have taken to social media to honor Amos. Fellow actor Martin Lawrence expressed his condolences, calling him a true legend. Jimmie Walker, Amos’s co-star from Good Times, conveyed his admiration and sadness, while Amos’s son, Kelly Christopher, remembered him as a kind-hearted man who was beloved by many. Veteran weatherman Al Roker highlighted Amos’s contributions to television, noting how he brought dignity and honesty to his roles.
Before his acting career, Amos played American football and debuted in comedies such as The Leslie Uggams Show and Maude. His character in Maude, along with Esther Rolle, inspired the creation of Good Times, which depicted the challenges faced by an African American family in a Chicago housing project. Amos had aspirations for more realistic portrayals and often clashed with the show’s creator, Norman Lear, over script changes, particularly regarding the character dynamics and the focus on JJ, portrayed by Walker.
Amos’s influence extends beyond his performances, as Good Times paved the way for future representation in television, including a British adaptation in the 1970s and a recent animated reboot by Netflix. His legacy in television and film continues to be celebrated, marked by an Emmy nomination for his role in Roots.
