Springfield philanthropist Jane Pitt, aged 84, has passed away. She was the mother of actor Brad Pitt and Springfield businessman Doug Pitt, as well as daughter Julie Neal. Jane was well-known for her dedication to charitable endeavors, particularly those supporting children.

Throughout her life, Jane was a passionate individual who began her career as a school counselor before fully immersing herself in philanthropic efforts. Notably, she and her husband William made a significant contribution of $1 million in 2009, which led to the founding of the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center at Mercy Hospital, affiliated with St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis. The center reflects her deep commitment to improving the lives of children battling cancer.

Born on August 13, 1940, in Memphis, Tennessee, Jane grew up in Joplin. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University, where she met her future husband, William Alvin “Bill” Pitt. They married on August 11, 1962, and later settled in Springfield, Missouri, where they raised their three children.

Jane’s passion for education extended beyond her role as a school teacher; she became one of the pioneering members of the ‘Parents As Teachers’ program in Springfield. This initiative allowed her to empower parents as they navigated their children’s educational journeys, leaving a lasting impact on many families in the community.

As an artist, Jane found joy in painting, particularly through craft projects with her grandchildren. She had a special connection to Ethiopia, where she supported community projects in Korah, reflecting her family dynamics as three of her grandchildren were born there. Jane’s strong faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she attended Ridgecrest Baptist Church regularly.

She is survived by her husband Bill, her three children, and an extensive family, including fourteen grandchildren. Her legacy continues through the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center and the ongoing charitable work by her family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Mercy Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center or WorldServe International for clean water projects, ensuring Jane’s spirit of giving will continue to impact future generations. A private Celebration of Life is planned for a future date, allowing family and friends to honor her memory and contributions.

This article not only memorializes Jane Pitt’s impactful life but also serves as a reminder of the positive changes one individual can create in their community.
