CityWatch LA mourns the sudden passing of Eric Preven, a dedicated contributor who died unexpectedly at the age of 62 from an apparent heart attack on Saturday. Eric was an integral part of CityWatchLA’s team from its inception, and his absence will be deeply felt throughout the organization. The team extends heartfelt condolences to his brother Joshua and the entire Preven family during this difficult time.
Eric Preven was a prominent journalist, writer-producer, and civic activist based in Los Angeles, known for his unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and empowering neighborhoods. He spent decades in Studio City, California, before focusing on advocacy and journalistic pursuits, building a successful career in television writing and production as a member of the Writers Guild of America.
His engaging and insightful pieces were published twice weekly in CityWatchLA, as well as in various respected platforms, including The Intercept, Los Angeles Daily News, and The New Republic. Eric’s relentless pursuit of public interest led to impressive achievements, such as his co-plaintiff role with the ACLU in a significant case that mandated the disclosure of legal expenses by the County of Los Angeles. He also secured a notable victory in 2019 concerning the Brown Act, reinforcing the public’s right to comment during “special meetings.”
His work did not go unnoticed; Eric was a finalist for the 2024 SoCal Journalism Awards for his thought-provoking piece titled “An Orwellian Wonderland.” Through his column, “Eric Preven’s Notebook,” he combined grassroots activism with investigative rigor, addressing critical local issues from government spending transparency to homelessness policy and civic reform. Eric’s belief in the power of active citizenship resonated with his sharp and approachable writing style.
Aside from his professional contributions, Eric was a proud alumnus of the University of Michigan, a lover of architecture, and enjoyed cooking, swimming, and writing poetry. He lived in a home designed by architect R. M. Schindler, reflecting his passion for design and culture.
Eric Preven’s role at CityWatchLA went beyond that of a writer; he was a steadfast advocate for transparency and a respected watchdog in the Los Angeles community. His curiosity, incessant questioning of authority, and belief in the rights of everyday citizens to demand accountability inspired both readers and fellow writers alike.
As we reflect on his impactful life, the void left by his departure is undeniable. We honor his legacy by continuing to uphold the principles he championed: promoting government accountability, empowering neighborhoods, and valuing truth.
To Joshua Preven and the Preven family, we want you to know that Eric’s contributions have significantly impacted numerous lives. The CityWatchLA family stands firmly with you in this time of sorrow and will always remember Eric’s dedication, insight, and fearless spirit.
May he find peace, and may his legacy inspire ongoing efforts for transparency and accountability in our communities.
