Diane Delano, the talented character actress known for her memorable roles as Officer Barbara Semanski on CBS’s “Northern Exposure” and the stern teacher Bobbi Glass on The WB’s “Popular,” has sadly passed away at the age of 67. Delano succumbed to cancer in her Sherman Oaks home, a fact announced by her dear friend Stepfanie Kramer.

Kramer reminisced about Delano’s vibrant personality, stating, “She was big and bold and brought her sharp wit and perfect comic timing to every role.” Delano’s strong presence and humorous style made her unforgettable on screen.

Throughout her illustrious career, she made guest appearances on a wide variety of popular shows, including “Falcon Crest,” “Cop Rock,” “Step by Step,” and “ER,” showcasing her versatility as an actress. Delano was particularly recognized for her recurring role as Officer Semanski in “Northern Exposure,” where she appeared in 12 memorable episodes from 1991 to 1995. Additionally, she spent two seasons playing the fierce Bobbi Glass in “Popular,” contributing to the show’s cult following.

Born in Los Angeles on January 29, 1957, Delano was somewhat destined for a career in acting, being related to Myrtland Vivian LaVarre, a New York stage actor. Early visits to sets with her tough-guy relative Lane Bradford likely fueled her passion for the entertainment industry, eventually leading her to start acting at just six years old.

Delano graduated from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts/West and embarked on her acting journey, making her screen debut in 1983 on NBC’s “St. Elsewhere” and appearing in the film “Heart Like a Wheel.” Over her 40-plus year career, she starred in an array of films including “A Mighty Wind,” “The Wicker Man,” and “The Ladykillers,” and provided voice work for characters in “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” and “Teen Titans.”
