Remembering a Master Shipbuilder: The Legacy of Luther H. Peacock

Luther H. Peacock, a renowned shipbuilder and devoted family man, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the age of 84, just two days before his 85th birthday. Born in Wilson County to Alvin and Lela Peacock, he grew up in Kenly, North Carolina, and received his education at Buckhorn Elementary and Rock Ridge High School.

At 18, Luther relocated to Newport News, Virginia, where he began an impressive 63-year career at the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company. He graduated from its esteemed Apprentice School and served two years in the United States Army. Upon returning to the shipyard, he played a crucial role in the submarine and aircraft carrier programs, contributing to the design of the Los Angeles-class attack submarines, a significant advancement in naval technology. His extensive experience encompassed the design and overhaul of aircraft carriers as well, marking him as a versatile force in the industry. Over six decades, he was instrumental in the construction and design of 53 naval vessels, earning the title of Master Shipbuilder for his exceptional skill.

Luther is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Marietha (Godwin), as well as his children, William Peacock of Newport News, VA, and Robert and his wife Linda Peacock of Selma, NC. He is also survived by his grandson, Luke Peacock, of Gloucester, Virginia. Luther was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Billy Ray Peacock and Janice Brown. He became a Christian at the age of 29 and was a second-generation member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church.

A passionate sports fan, Luther played baseball and football for the Apprentice School and took part in the Newport News Shipbuilding leagues. He supported teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Baltimore Colts, and the University of North Carolina. Golf was a beloved hobby, especially when enjoyed with family and friends, including participation in the Apprentice School Alumni golf tournament. He will be remembered for his strong faith, work ethic, kind nature, humor, and unwavering support for his family.

A graveside service is scheduled for September 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Godwin Family Cemetery, located at 537 Jerusalem Church Road, Kenly, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the scholarship fund for the Newport News Apprentice School Foundation in Luther H. Peacock’s honor.
