Acclaimed British actress Dame Maggie Smith passed away on September 27, 2024, at the age of 89.
Born in 1934 in Ilford, England, Smith spent her childhood in Oxford and made her stage debut as a teenager in a local theater. She had an illustrious career, amassing a collection of prestigious awards including Oscars, Tonys, Golden Globes, and three Emmys for her portrayal of Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham in “Downton Abbey.”
Smith gained recognition for her roles in numerous beloved projects spanning stage, television, and film, including Oscar-winning performances in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and “California Suite.” Her filmography also featured “Gosford Park,” “A Room with a View,” “Tea with Mussolini,” and the “Harry Potter” series, among others.
In 1990, she was honored as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Her sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, issued a statement expressing their deep sorrow at her passing. They noted she died peacefully in a hospital surrounded by family and friends. They thanked the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care during her final days and requested privacy during this difficult time.
