Former Florida State University (FSU) President John Thrasher has died at the age of 81. He passed away early Friday morning in Orlando, as confirmed by a statement from his family. Thrasher had been bravely fighting cancer, a struggle that was publicly acknowledged last month.
His family expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support they received during his illness, thanking those who offered their well wishes and prayers, as well as the medical staff at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Moffitt Cancer Center, Orlando Health, and Cornerstone Hospice.
Thrasher had a distinguished career, not only as the 15th president of FSU but also as Florida’s Speaker of the House and a member of the Florida Senate. His contributions to the state extended beyond politics; he was known for his kindness and leadership qualities, as noted by his friend Steve MacNamara. MacNamara described Thrasher as someone who truly engaged with people, fostering a sense of community and connection.
Colleagues and friends remember Thrasher as a dedicated family man. His commitment to family, faith, and his alma mater, Florida State, were central to his identity. Liz Eggert-Lovell, who worked closely with him, reflected on his extraordinary humanity and expressed sadness at his passing.
Plans for Thrasher’s memorial include a private burial in Orange Park, followed by a celebration of his life at FSU’s Ruby Diamond Concert Hall on August 19.
Thrasher’s legacy will endure through the many lives he touched and the profound impacts he made in both his professional and personal life, leaving a lasting impression on the community he served.
