Three foreign nationals, Yu Yang Fang, Minghui Dai, and Zhou Lan, have entered not guilty pleas concerning charges of unlawful possession of 39.5 grams of methamphetamine. Additionally, Zhou and Dai are facing further allegations of possessing over $7,000 in local and foreign currency, believed to be proceeds of crime. Both individuals are also charged with unlawful supply, while Yu is charged with possession related to suspected criminal proceeds.
The defendants appeared in court before Magistrate Vinaina Diroiroi, where an interpreter was provided to assist in understanding the charges and the legal proceedings. Although the prosecution did not oppose bail, the magistrate emphasized the court’s responsibilities under the bail act, ultimately deciding to deny bail due to the public interest tied to the case.
Shirley Tivao, the defense attorney from SLS Legal, informed the court that the visas for the accused individuals are set to expire in November. She raised concerns about the challenges they are facing while in custody, including difficulties in obtaining necessities like clothing, as they lack family support in Fiji.
The magistrate deemed it necessary to keep the defendants remanded, citing public interest and the seriousness of their charges. The court has scheduled a hearing from November 3 to November 5 this year and has instructed the prosecution to handle administrative matters such as visa extensions ahead of the upcoming hearing. Prosecutors are set to call upon 16 witnesses as part of their case, highlighting the significant legal proceedings underway.
