Fiji’s recent ascension to Tier-One rugby status marks a significant milestone, not only for the players and coaching staff but also for referees who play an essential role in maintaining fairness and quality during matches. With this elevation, Fiji Rugby is intensifying its efforts to improve officiating standards, spanning from local fields to the international stage.

James Bolabiu, the High Performance Referees Manager for Fiji Rugby, stated that achieving Tier-One status requires referees capable of meeting the same benchmarks as their international peers. He acknowledged, “For our team to perform at a very high level, we also need good referees who referee them from grassroots right up to international level, so our players are well versed with the laws.”

Bolabiu’s commitment extends beyond merely overseeing officials; he aims to ensure that Fiji’s referees are adequately prepared for the challenges that come with being part of a Tier-One nation. He noted, “I have to make sure that referees are up to the standard of a Tier 1 country. Referees are the unsung heroes of the game; without a referee, a rugby match will never be the same.”

This initiative to enhance the quality of refereeing is vital to Fiji’s dedication to creating a high-performance system that aligns with global standards. The focus on developing officials not only elevates the standard of refereeing but also helps players gain a deeper understanding of the game, fostering a healthier rugby ecosystem in Fiji. As the nation embraces its new status, the emphasis on high-quality officiating highlights a hopeful future for Fijian rugby, paving the way for greater success on the international stage.
