Reddit Teams Up with Major Sports Leagues: What This Means for Fans

Reddit is making a significant move into the sports marketing industry, announcing several new partnerships with major sports leagues on Monday. The leagues include the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), PGA Tour, and National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR).

As part of these partnerships, Reddit users will have access to video highlights from games and tournaments, player Q&A sessions (known as AMAs), behind-the-scenes content, and other special features provided by the leagues during their seasons and major events.

Reddit boasts over 1,000 active communities dedicated to sports, and interest in these forums has surged, with a reported 26% increase in screenviews over the past year.

The sports marketing sector is projected to grow by more than 20%, reaching an estimated value of over $55 billion by 2030, with fans primarily turning to platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) for sports content.

To boost its revenue ahead of a potential initial public offering, Reddit secured a $60 million-per-year AI licensing deal with Google in February. Following the announcement of these new sports partnerships, Reddit’s shares rose nearly 7% on Monday.

Key figures include:

1,000: Number of sports-related Reddit forums
20.4 billion: Screenviews of sports-related Reddit forums in the past year
249 million: Monthly engagements in sports subreddits worldwide
$55 billion: Projected value of the sports marketing sector by 2030
$243 million: Reddit’s revenue in the first quarter
