Reddit Scores Big with Major Sports Leagues: What’s Next?

Reddit is making a significant entry into the sports marketing industry.

On Monday, the platform revealed new partnerships with several major sports leagues, including the National Football League (NFL), the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), the PGA Tour, and NASCAR.

These collaborations will provide Reddit users with access to a variety of engaging content, including video highlights, player AMA sessions (ask me anything), behind-the-scenes footage, and other exclusive material shared by the leagues throughout their respective seasons and major events.

Reddit noted it has over 1,000 active communities focused on sports, with engagement in these forums seeing substantial growth. The site reported a 26% increase in screen views for sports-related communities over the past year.

The sports marketing industry is projected to expand by more than 20%, reaching a value exceeding $55 billion by 2030. Sports fans are primarily engaging with content on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter).

In its efforts to increase revenue as it prepares for an initial public offering (IPO), Reddit previously signed a $60 million-per-year AI licensing agreement with Google in February. Following the announcement of its sports partnerships, Reddit shares rose nearly 7% on Monday.

Key statistics include:

– 1,000: Number of sports-related Reddit communities
– 20.4 billion: Total screen views on sports-related forums in the last year
– 249 million: Monthly interactions (posts, votes, comments) on sports subreddits worldwide
– $55 billion: Projected value of the sports marketing sector by 2030
– $243 million: Reddit’s revenue for the first quarter.
