Reddit Scores Big with Major Sports Leagues: What’s Next?

Reddit is making a significant move into the sports marketing arena.

On Monday, the social media platform announced new partnerships with several prominent sports leagues, including the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), PGA Tour, and NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing).

As part of these partnerships, Reddit users will have access to a variety of content, including video highlights from games and tournaments, player AMAs (Ask Me Anything sessions), behind-the-scenes videos, and other exclusive material shared by the leagues during their seasons and major events.

Reddit claims to host over 1,000 active communities dedicated to sports, and there has been a marked increase in interest within these forums. Screen views on sports-related threads rose by 26% over the past year.

The sports marketing industry is projected to grow over 20% to exceed $55 billion by 2030, with fans primarily using platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) for sports content.

In preparation for its anticipated public offering, Reddit has been exploring new revenue opportunities. Earlier this year, the company secured a $60 million-per-year AI licensing agreement with Google. After a successful IPO, Reddit reported first-quarter revenues that were nearly 50% higher than the previous year. Following the announcement of the new sports partnerships, Reddit’s shares rose by nearly 7% on Monday.
