Reddit Scores Big: New Partnerships Transform Sports Engagement

Reddit is making a significant move into the sports marketing industry with a series of new partnerships announced on Monday. The social media platform has teamed up with several major sports leagues, including the National Football League (NFL), the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), the PGA Tour, and NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing).

As part of these collaborations, Reddit users will have access to exclusive video highlights from games and tournaments, player AMA sessions (ask me anything), behind-the-scenes footage, and other unique content from the leagues throughout their respective seasons and major events.

Reddit reports having over 1,000 active communities in the sports category, with user interest significantly rising. The platform noted a 26% increase in screen views of sports-related forums over the past year.

The sports marketing industry is projected to grow by more than 20%, reaching a value exceeding $55 billion by 2030, as fans increasingly turn to platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) for sports content.

In its efforts to boost revenue ahead of a potential public offering, Reddit previously secured a lucrative $60 million-per-year artificial intelligence licensing agreement with Google in February. Following the announcement of these new sports partnerships, Reddit’s shares rose nearly 7% on Monday.

Key statistics include:

– 1,000: Number of sports-related Reddit forums
– 20.4 billion: Screen views of sports-related Reddit forums in the past year
– 249 million: Monthly engagements (posts, votes, comments) in sports subreddits globally
– $55 billion: Estimated value of the sports marketing sector by 2030
– $243 million: Reddit’s revenue in the first quarter.
