After being dismissed from his position with the Kings earlier this year, where he held a record of 164-130-44, McLellan has a career coaching record of 598-412-134 and has led his teams to the playoffs nine times. His notable achievements include guiding the Sharks to the Western Conference finals in consecutive years.
Starting his NHL coaching career as an assistant with the Red Wings back in 2005, McLellan was part of the coaching staff during the team’s 2008 Stanley Cup victory. He faces his first challenge as head coach in Detroit with an upcoming game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Lalonde, aged 52, served close to three seasons at the helm but was unable to replicate past successes. His overall record with the Red Wings stands at 89-86-23, and his tenure will be remembered for falling short of the team’s historic glory days.
In addition to Lalonde’s dismissal, assistant coach Bob Boughner has also left the organization. Trent Yawney has been brought in to join McLellan’s coaching staff.
