The highly anticipated sequel to the popular romantic comedy “Red, White & Royal Blue” has been officially greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios, with the title confirmed as “Red, White & Royal Wedding.” This new film will see Jamie Babbit, known for her work on “But I’m a Cheerleader” and “Only Murders in the Building”, take the director’s chair.
The original film captured the heartfelt story of Claremont-Diaz, played by Taylor Zakhar Perez, the First Son of the United States, and Prince Henry, portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine, who went from adversaries to lovers while trying to keep their relationship under wraps from the media. The love story, adapted from Casey McQuiston’s novel, resonated deeply with audiences, prompting Amazon to expand on this beloved narrative.
Julie Rapaport, head of film at Amazon MGM, expressed excitement over the project, highlighting the significant positive response from fans. She noted that Babbit’s unique blend of comedic style and emotional storytelling makes her the ideal choice to continue Alex and Henry’s journey. Babbit herself echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of infusing optimism and joy into the narrative of the sequel.
The screenplay for the sequel will be penned by Gemma Burgess, Matthew López, and McQuiston, with plot details still under wraps. However, the title suggests that viewers can expect a wedding for the charming couple. McQuiston shared her enthusiasm about revisiting the characters and collaborating with Babbit, praising López for his contributions to the original film.
Returning producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter expressed their delight at the opportunity to continue the franchise, confident in Babbit’s ability to portray the queer storylines with authenticity and humor. Salke, who was instrumental in bringing the first film to life, looked forward to another occasion to witness the dynamic between Alex and Henry as it unfolds.
Though the project has been in development since last summer, there has been no official announcement regarding whether “Red, White & Royal Wedding” will premiere on streaming platforms or in theaters. In a light-hearted exchange during the Emmys, Zakhar Perez playfully evaded questions about the sequel’s plot, wanting to avoid any spoilers.
With Babbit at the helm and the original cast and creative team returning, fans of “Red, White & Royal Blue” can look forward to a continuation of this enchanting love story that captured the hearts of many.
