Red Sox Seek to End Streak Amid Roster Shake-Up

The Boston Red Sox are aiming to break their five-game losing streak as they prepare to face the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. Ahead of the game, the team announced that infielder Marcelo Mayer has been placed on the bereavement list, prompting a roster adjustment.

In a statement published on X (formerly Twitter), the Red Sox confirmed, “The Red Sox today placed INF Marcelo Mayer on the Bereavement List. To fill his spot, Boston recalled INF/OF Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.” Mayer’s absence is uncertain, but players can remain on the bereavement list for up to three days, meaning he might miss the entire series against Toronto.

Mayer, one of Boston’s top prospects, made his major league debut in May, stepping in when Alex Bregman was sidelined due to a quadriceps injury. Although he is currently batting .206, he has contributed four home runs and seven RBIs. Mayer has also played multiple infield positions, including third base, shortstop, and second base.

In light of Mayer’s absence, Sogard returns to the big league roster. This season, Sogard has played in 14 games for the Red Sox, with a batting average of .245 and no home runs, contributing two RBIs. He is expected to play third base and bat ninth in the lineup for Friday’s game.

Despite the team’s challenges, including a below .500 record of 40-42, the Red Sox remain competitive in the American League wild card race. The match against the Blue Jays is set to begin at 7:10 p.m. ET, offering the team a chance to turn around their fortunes.

Overall, the ongoing struggle reflects the resilience of the team and their capacity to adapt through difficult times. Fans will be hopeful that the returning players can make a positive impact as the Red Sox seek to regain their momentum.
