Red Sox Refocus: Will Corbin Burnes Lead Boston’s Offseason Resurgence?

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox are making strategic changes this offseason after missing out on key players. Following their unsuccessful pursuit of free-agent pitcher Max Fried, who recently inked a significant eight-year, $218 million contract with the New York Yankees, the Red Sox are now focusing on former Baltimore Orioles standout Corbin Burnes.

The Red Sox actively pursued Fried, but both they and the Yankees were unable to sign Juan Soto, who recently committed to a landmark deal with the New York Mets. As a result, Boston is redirecting its efforts toward Burnes, according to reports from Sean McAdam of Mass Live. However, they face stiff competition from teams like the Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants, with the Blue Jays emerging as frontrunners for the 30-year-old right-handed pitcher.

Burnes had an impressive season in 2023, posting a record of 15-9, a 2.92 ERA, and a 1.096 WHIP over 32 starts. His performance earned him a fifth-place finish in the AL Cy Young voting. Although his strikeouts dipped to 181 from a career-high 243 in 2022, he still proved to be a reliable pitcher, logging 194.1 innings on the mound. Over the last three seasons, Burnes ranks third in the majors in total innings pitched.

Previously, Burnes played six seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he won the NL Cy Young Award in 2021, leading the league with a 2.43 ERA. If the Red Sox can secure his services, he would enhance a starting rotation that already includes Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and Lucas Giolito. Nevertheless, it’s advisable for Boston to seek additional starting pitching options this offseason.

Given current market dynamics, Burnes is projected to command a lucrative contract exceeding $250 million for up to eight years. Having declined a qualifying offer from Baltimore, signing Burnes would also cost the Red Sox their second-highest draft pick.

While the Red Sox’s offseason has seen setbacks, the pursuit of a top-tier talent like Burnes gives fans a reason for hope. With a strong pitching addition, Boston could bolster its chances for a successful season ahead, demonstrating their commitment to building a competitive team.

The upcoming moves will be crucial for the Red Sox as they aim to rebound and strengthen their roster for the challenges that lie ahead.
