Red Sox Outfielder Apologizes After Controversial Incident at Fenway

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has issued an apology after he was recorded using a homophobic slur directed at a fan during a live broadcast. The incident occurred during a game against the Houston Astros at Fenway Park on Sunday.

While Duran was batting in the bottom of the sixth inning, an Astros fan shouted, “you need a tennis racket.” Duran responded with “shut up,” followed by an expletive and the offensive slur.

Following the Red Sox’s 10-2 defeat, Duran released a statement expressing remorse for his actions. He said, “During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan. I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility.” Duran, 27, added that he would use this experience to educate himself and his teammates.

The Red Sox organization also responded, acknowledging the incident and supporting Duran’s apology. They emphasized their commitment to inclusivity, stating, “We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches and staff on the importance of inclusivity.”

There is potential for disciplinary action against Duran from either the Red Sox or Major League Baseball, as similar incidents in the past have resulted in suspensions for players like Matt Joyce and Kevin Pillar.

Jarren Duran has been with the Red Sox since 2021 and previously played for several minor league teams. Earlier this year, he was named the MVP of the 2024 MLB All-Star Game and received the Red Sox’s Heart & Hustle Award, recognizing his passion for the game.
