The Boston Red Sox have identified Alex Bregman as their primary target this offseason, but as January progresses, he remains unsigned. Despite interest from multiple teams, the Red Sox appear to be in the lead to secure his services. Red Sox manager Alex Cora recently commented on Bregman’s free agency, stating, “The ball is in his court,” according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.

In an effort to retain the talented player, the Red Sox have made an “aggressive offer” to Bregman, leaving it up to him whether to accept or continue exploring other options. Bregman, who earned his first All-Star selection since 2019 last season, has become a pivotal figure for the team and a strong leader in the clubhouse. During the recent winter meetings, GM Craig Breslow praised him, and Cora echoed that admiration on Saturday.

“Last year, he checked all of the boxes I knew he was going to check,” Cora noted, emphasizing that Bregman exceeded expectations. While he cannot directly discuss free agents in concrete terms, Cora expressed a clear desire to keep Bregman in Boston, stating, “I like the player. We like the player. Let’s see what happens.”

Bregman’s impressive performance last season solidified his status as one of the top third basemen in baseball, and he is in pursuit of a long-term contract. While the Chicago Cubs have also shown interest in him, the Red Sox’s determination to keep Bregman suggests a hopeful outlook for both the team and fans eager to see him continue his career in Boston.
