The upcoming U20 competition is poised to energize the second leg of the Agromarketing Grassroots Fiji 7s in Bua next month, demonstrating the increasing enthusiasm and participation observed during the recent series at HFC Bank Stadium. Organizers have announced that a total of 24 U20 teams will compete in Bua, a number that significantly exceeds the participation of men’s and women’s teams, which stand at 14 and 10 respectively.

This increased commitment to youth development comes in response to the impressive turnout during the first leg in Suva, where 20 U20 teams exceeded the initial target of 12 teams. Fiji Sports Council CEO Gilbert Vakalalabure highlighted that although the tournament traditionally accommodates 16 local teams from Bua and its vicinity, along with eight teams from other regions, the extraordinary interest in youth participation has warranted an increase in U20 team entries.

“The Bua leg will feature more U20 teams than men’s teams,” Vakalalabure stated. He further emphasized that this initiative aligns with a larger strategy to bolster pathways for young athletes by creating competitive environments that meet national standards both on and off the field.

In addition to rugby sevens, the Bua event will include volleyball, which is expected to draw significant community support and enhance the occasion’s overall appeal. With this blend of youth rugby, alongside senior men’s and women’s competitions and volleyball, the Bua leg is set to be a dynamic multi-sport festival that continues the series’ objective to promote grassroots sports across Fiji. This initiative is not only about competition but also about fostering community spirit and engaging the youth in healthy activities, paving the way for the next generation of athletes.
