Record-Setting Performance: New London’s Fletcher Shines in Thanksgiving Football Showdown

New London’s senior running back, Demitrias Fletcher, showcased an outstanding performance on Thanksgiving morning, leading his team to victory in the historic high school football rivalry against Norwich Free Academy. Fletcher, who previously played at IMG Academy and St. Thomas More, delivered an impressive eight-touchdown game, propelling the Whalers to a decisive 52-21 win at NFA’s Turf Field and securing a spot in the CIAC Class M state playoffs.

The Whalers concluded their regular season with a 6-4 record, clinching the eighth and final playoff position. They are set to face the top-seeded Daniel Hand in a rematch scheduled for December 3 in Madison. This victory served as a significant moment for New London and its second-year coach, Bobby Sanchez, who emphasized the team’s belief in their capabilities. “We kept saying NL belongs in the playoff bracket… It’s always been, ‘Why not us?’” he remarked.

Throughout the game, Fletcher rushed for an impressive 207 yards on just nine carries, scoring six of his team’s touchdowns on the ground, while also catching three passes for 101 yards and two additional touchdowns. He fell short of tying the state record of ten touchdowns in a single game, which was set by Zach Davis of Sheehan in 2016.

The Wildcats, although still in contention for a playoff berth, struggled with ball security, losing three fumbles in the first quarter. Coach Dylan Schroth identified these mistakes, along with tackling issues, as pivotal moments that contributed to the defeat. Despite the loss, he noted his team’s progress over the season and expressed hope for the future, saying, “We’re a young football team… hopefully, our guys can learn from it and come back stronger next year.”

As the storied rivalry continues, dating back to 1875, the significance of Thanksgiving football in New England remains palpable. Both coaches acknowledged the special tradition, highlighting how moments like this can define the players and the community.

In summary, Fletcher’s exceptional performance not only secured a playoff position for New London but also highlighted the team’s resilience and determination this season. As they prepare for the upcoming challenges, there is a strong sense of hope and potential for both teams moving forward, signaling a promising future for young athletes on the field.
