Austin Reaves, guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, experienced a frightening fall during the late second quarter of the team’s 101-93 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday. Fortunately, Reaves was able to return for the second half, showing no significant impediment to his performance.
Following the game, it was reported that Reaves underwent an MRI, which thankfully revealed no structural damage to his back. He traveled with the Lakers to Utah for their upcoming game against the Jazz on Sunday, although his playing status remains uncertain.
Lakers coach JJ Redick commented on Reaves’ fall, referencing the moment when Reaves attempted to maneuver around defenders Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Isaiah Hartenstein. The collision led to Reaves landing hard on his back. He was treated by the medical staff but initially struggled in the game before being subbed out. However, he made a comeback in the third quarter, contributing 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
This season, Reaves has shown significant improvement, averaging a career-high 17.1 points, along with 3.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. He plays a pivotal role within the team’s dynamics, ranking third in scoring behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis and second in assists. His resilience is evident as he has played all 18 games this season and appeared in every game last year.
The Lakers have had a turbulent start to the season, winning six consecutive games earlier this month but experiencing a downturn with four losses in their last five attempts, currently placing them sixth in the competitive Western Conference.
Despite the rocky patch, the positive news regarding Reaves’ health is a silver lining for the Lakers, who will need his contributions to navigate the ups and downs of the season ahead. It’s a reminder of the team’s strength and potential when they remain healthy and united, offering hope for their future performances.
