After nearly two decades off the air, the beloved educational series “Reading Rainbow” is making a comeback with a fresh face and a new approach to literacy advocacy. PBS recently announced that Mychal Threets, a well-known literacy advocate and library influencer, will take over as the new host of the program. Threets, a California librarian popular for his engaging TikTok videos about library life and literacy, succeeds the original host, actor LeVar Burton.
Originally broadcast from 1983 to 2006, “Reading Rainbow” became one of PBS’s most popular programs, cherished for highlighting the importance of literacy through award-winning children’s literature. The series introduced young audiences to diverse cultures and experiences through stories, fostering a love for reading over its distinguished 23-year run.
The newly revamped “Reading Rainbow” will introduce audiences to fresh content, featuring new books and a lineup of guest stars. Notable celebrities such as John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, and Adam Devine will participate as readers, while appearances from “Dancing with the Stars” dancers Rylee Arnold and Ezra Sosa, as well as “The Bear” actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach, promise to bring a modern flair to the show.
This revival aims to continue the legacy of promoting literacy, encouraging a new generation to explore the enriching world of books and storytelling with a relatable host in Mychal Threets. The show’s return signifies not just a nostalgic revisit for past viewers but a hopeful initiative to inspire young minds to develop a lasting passion for reading.
