Travelers at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) are being advised to secure their REAL ID ahead of new requirements taking effect next month. Starting February 1, those who arrive at the airport without a REAL ID will incur a $45 fine in addition to undergoing additional screening by TSA.

The REAL ID requirement has been in place since May 2025, and previously, travelers who did not possess one were issued a pink slip indicating the need for further screening. This led to delays not only for the individual passenger but also for others in line.

RDU officials are encouraging travelers to obtain their REAL ID as soon as possible to avoid fines and complications. The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is ready to assist with this process. DMV Commissioner Paul Tine highlighted that all 114 driver’s license officers are available for walk-in customers throughout the day, while appointments can also be made seven days in advance, with new slots being added daily. This proactive approach aims to alleviate any rush as summer approaches, which is typically a peak travel season.

Travelers will have the option to pay the $45 fine at RDU using a QR code or online at pay.gov. Importantly, the fee will only need to be paid once within a ten-day period for round-trip travel, providing some relief for short-term travel plans.

It is advisable for travelers to act swiftly to secure their REAL IDs to facilitate smoother travel experiences ahead of the new regulations.
