Cedric Mullins, once one of the most sought-after outfielders during the 2025 trade deadline, has officially signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays for the 2026 season. This move comes after a challenging period with the New York Mets, where he struggled to find his form, posting .182/.284/.281 in 42 games following his acquisition in July. Prior to joining the Mets, Mullins had a prolific career with the Baltimore Orioles from 2018 to 2025, highlighted by a standout 2021 season where he hit 30 home runs and earned both Silver Slugger and All-Star honors.
In his last seasons with the Orioles, Mullins encountered a dip in performance, averaging .244/.311/.407 from 2022 to 2024, alongside a decrease in power numbers, managing only 16 home runs and 64 RBIs annually during that span. His speed remained a significant asset, however, as he stole 85 bases over those three years. The 2025 season was no exception, as he struggled to maintain his previous All-Star prowess, hitting only .229/.305/.433 before the trade.
The Rays, recognizing center field as a potential weakness, have now brought Mullins in as a short-term solution. He is expected to stabilize the position while the team develops younger prospects, including Chandler Simpson and Jonny DeLuca, both of whom have yet to prove themselves at the major league level.
Mullins will be looking to bounce back in 2026, aiming to not only help the Rays compete but also to regain his full potential, possibly setting himself up for a more lucrative long-term deal in the future. This new opportunity in the American League East provides Mullins with a chance to revive his career and contribute to a team known for its competitive spirit.
