The Tampa Bay Rays have made a roster change by optioning rookie Chandler Simpson to Triple-A Durham to activate outfielder Jake Mangum from the injured list. Manager Kevin Cash acknowledged the difficulty of this decision, particularly highlighting Simpson’s strong performance on the field.
“He’s been playing really good,” Cash stated. “All decisions are tough, but this one was right at the top of the list. We respect what Chandler has done. I believe getting him regular reps in Durham can be beneficial for his development.”
Jake Mangum has been sidelined since April 24 due to a left groin strain. Prior to his injury, he was enjoying a productive season, boasting a .338 batting average with four doubles and seven RBIs across 21 games. Upon his return to the lineup, Mangum was positioned to bat third and play center field in Friday’s matchup against Houston, although Cash indicated that Mangum would also see time in left field, where his versatility could be beneficial.
“He’s able to play both spots, provide solid at-bats, and runs the bases exceptionally well,” Cash added. He expressed confidence in Mangum’s defensive skills and hoped he would seamlessly continue his positive performance from before his injury.
Simpson had earlier been called up to fill in for outfield injuries and quickly made an impact with his speed and base-stealing prowess, accumulating three stolen bases in a recent game, thereby bringing his season total to 19, currently ranking him third in the majors. Over 35 games, Simpson maintained a .285 batting average with four doubles and 11 RBIs, showcasing his capability as an emerging player in the league.
Both players bring significant talent to the Rays’ roster, and their performance will be crucial as the team navigates the remainder of the season. The return of Mangum is particularly promising, especially given his solid form earlier in the season. As the Rays aim for a successful campaign, having both players contribute effectively will be vital in achieving their goals.
