Raya hails Zubimendi as Arsenal’s midfield engine in title bid

Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya has highlighted one new signing who has particularly impressed him after the club’s significant summer transfer window. With an investment exceeding £250 million, Arsenal strengthened their squad ahead of the current season. The acquisition of high-profile players such as Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Piero Hincapie demonstrates the ambitious plans of manager Mikel Arteta and the club’s hierarchy.

This strategic investment seems to be paying dividends, as Arsenal has enjoyed an outstanding start, remaining unbeaten in their first 14 matches across all competitions and holding a four-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Among the new arrivals, Raya, who joined the Gunners from Brentford and has quickly established himself as a key figure, has specifically lauded Martin Zubimendi. The Spaniard emphasized Zubimendi’s adaptability to the Premier League and praised his intelligence on the pitch. “He’s a player that is very, very clever and adapted very well to the league … He’s just adapted so quick and you can see what he does for the team,” Raya remarked.

Zubimendi’s impact has been significant since his arrival at Emirates Stadium. Fending off competition from Real Madrid, Arsenal secured Zubimendi in early July for a reported fee of up to £60 million. His performances, which include three goal contributions, have solidified his role in the midfield alongside Declan Rice, proving his value early in the season.

Despite a promising start to the season, Raya maintained a focus on the long-term journey ahead. He expressed the ambition typical of Arsenal, stating, “Of course, we are Arsenal and we want to win the Premier League. But it’s too far [away]; we are only ten, 11 games into the season.” He stressed the importance of concentrating on each game, suggesting a measured approach to the campaign.

Amid the title race chatter, which many speculate will see a contest between Arsenal and Manchester City, Raya noted the league’s competitiveness. “There’s a lot of teams that can fight for the Premier League,” he acknowledged, pointing out that any team has the potential to emerge victorious as the season unfolds.

As the international break concludes, Raya’s focus shifts back to club responsibilities, preparing for pivotal Premier League matches against rivals Tottenham and Chelsea, followed by a critical Champions League clash with Bayern Munich. The upcoming fixtures represent a crucial juncture for Arsenal as they aim to maintain their strong form in multiple competitions.
