Country music icon Ray Stevens experienced a mild heart attack on Friday in Nashville, according to a statement from his team. The 86-year-old entertainer was admitted to a local hospital after experiencing chest pains, and a heart catheterization confirmed the heart attack. Following the diagnosis, he underwent a surgical procedure on Monday to address the issue.
Due to his health concerns, Stevens has announced the cancellation of all performances until July. Fellow artists and fans have expressed their support, with Country Rebel posting thoughts and prayers for his recovery on social media.
Interestingly, Stevens had previously announced his retirement after 2024. However, he unexpectedly revealed in May that he would be resuming regular performances at his CabaRay Showroom in Nashville, indicating plans to showcase songs from his latest album, “Say Whut?”, alongside classic hits. He described the upcoming performances as an “all-new show” filled with fresh music and stories, assuring fans that beloved characters like Ethel and Gitarzan would still make an appearance.
Stevens has had an illustrious career in music since 1957, highlighted by his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2019. He is also celebrated as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and other prestigious music halls of fame.
As he embarks on this recovery journey, there is hope that Stevens will soon return to the stage, continuing to share his unique blend of humor and music with fans.
