Ravens Struggle with Offensive Line Woes in Chiefs Showdown

The Baltimore Ravens faced significant challenges in their recent game against the Kansas City Chiefs, primarily due to an offensive line that struggled to provide adequate protection. The Ravens lost an AFC-high 15 free agents during the offseason, which became evident on the field, particularly in the first half where multiple drives were cut short by poor blocking. With the absence of key players like right tackle Morgan Moses and starting guards Kevin Zeitler and John Simpson, quarterback Lamar Jackson was frequently under pressure.

In an attempt to address their offensive line concerns, the Ravens implemented a mix of unconventional options. This included rookie Roger Rosengarten at right tackle and imposing right guard Daniel Faalele, who stands at 6-foot-8 and 380 pounds, as well as left guard Andrew Vorhees, a talented prospect whose draft stock fell due to an ACL injury. Vorhees made his NFL debut on Thursday, but the offensive line’s performance was largely ineffective, with Jackson averaging a throw distance of just over a yard in the first half, highlighting the team’s struggles.

As the game progressed, while pass protection improved, run blocking remained a significant concern. Ronnie Stanley showcased resilience after an offseason of recovery, but overall performance from the defense, including players Roquan Smith and Kyle Hamilton, raised questions. Smith struggled in coverage, contributing to a disappointing defensive display. Tight end Mark Andrews had limited production, earning just 14 yards from two catches but faced double coverage during the game.

Jackson’s determination was evident as he pushed for extra yards and helped the Ravens maintain competitiveness, posting more offensive yards and first downs than the Chiefs. However, achieving critical plays in key moments still eluded Baltimore. The Ravens employed a “12” personnel strategy, utilizing two tight ends more frequently than in past games, but must find ways to keep playmakers like Zay Flowers and Derrick Henry more involved in the offense.

Despite the outcome, Jackson’s ability to improvise demonstrated his importance to the team’s success, with the need for better support from the offensive scheme as they prepare for the remainder of the season. Defensive coordinator Zach Orr’s adjustments will also be crucial for addressing coverage issues and enhancing the overall performance moving forward.
