In a heartbreaking incident at the Big Bear nest, a raven managed to breach a pair of bald eagle eggs belonging to the pair Jackie and Shadow. The unfortunate event unfolded when the eggs were left unguarded for several hours. Around 3:30 p.m., the raven accessed the nest, resulting in one of the eggs being cracked while it attempted to peck at the second egg, which fortunately remained intact.

The non-profit organization Friends of Big Bear Valley reported on social media, expressing their sadness over the event. They noted that Jackie had not returned to the nest in time to protect the eggs after Shadow had briefly left. The organization remarked on the mystery of the situation, acknowledging that while the eagles had been diligent in incubating their eggs, circumstances led to this tragic outcome.

Despite the loss, there remains a glimmer of hope. FOBBV indicated that since the breeding season is still in its early stages, Jackie and Shadow might have the opportunity to lay a second clutch of eggs, though this is not guaranteed. However, the eagles will need to pause their incubation for a month to allow for recovery before they can lay again.

For those interested, the live stream of the nest, provided by Friends of Big Bear Valley, continues to offer a glimpse into the lives of these magnificent eagles, as the community rallies around Jackie and Shadow during this difficult time.
