Raúl Jiménez: Chasing History and Glory for Mexico

Raúl Jiménez has emerged as one of the standout stars of Mexican football on the international stage, currently making waves with Fulham. His aspirations extend beyond club success; he dreams of becoming a leading figure for the Mexican national team.

Recently, Jiménez showcased his talent in the CONCACAF Nations League, where he was the top scorer, helping propel Mexico to victory in the tournament, solidifying his status as a vital player.

In an interview with David Faitelson, Jiménez shared his ambitions with the national team, including a goal to surpass Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández as Mexico’s all-time leading scorer. “It’s something that’s there, I know it draws attention, but it’s not something that keeps me up at night. I don’t feel pressured to break the record, but it does motivate me,” he stated.

Having participated in the 2018 World Cup, Jiménez faced challenges due to injuries, but he now sets his sights on the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico. He believes, “I can be an important piece to help the team,” especially at 35, feeling in a prime position to fulfill the dream of playing on home soil.

Moreover, Jiménez addressed the competition for a starting spot with young striker Santiago Giménez, emphasizing that both players have the potential to shine. “He’s a young man carving his own path and leaving the legacy he desires. Every player has good and bad moments. We showed in the last FIFA window that it doesn’t have to be one or the other; we can both play well together,” he remarked.

Jiménez’s passion and dedication to elevating the team’s performance reflect a hopeful outlook for Mexican football. As they prepare for significant upcoming tournaments, the unity among players like Jiménez and Giménez could be crucial in nurturing a strong and competitive national squad.
