Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara is taking significant steps to fill the political gap created by the recent passing of Vatimi Rayalu, the former Minister for Agriculture. Traditional leaders from Lau Province have expressed their determination to take an active role in choosing the next parliamentary representative for the area.
In a recent assembly of the Bose Vanua o Lau, Tui Nayau Ratu Tevita highlighted the importance of maintaining robust leadership in Suva to ensure that Lau’s development priorities are upheld. He acknowledged the current political void in representation from the yasana and emphasized the need for the community to unite in deciding on a candidate capable of effectively promoting the province’s growth.
“There is a vacuum there in terms of political leadership,” he stated, underlining that the provincial council must collaborate to identify a suitable candidate for the position. While Ratu Tevita hasn’t ruled out the possibility of running in future elections, he remains focused on the development of Lau, prioritizing initiatives like improving shipping services, fortifying family structures to address issues such as drug use and HIV, and empowering youth and women in the community economically.
He conveyed a strong belief in the power of collective action, remarking, “Our own means… is the best development you can have,” which stresses the importance of community empowerment in achieving development goals—with appropriate support from enforcement agencies when necessary.
Ratu Tevita’s dedication to fostering community solidarity and cultural identity mirrors a broader trend within the Lau community. Recently, nearly 90 percent of chiefly titles have been filled, heralding a renaissance in leadership roles that signifies hope and renewal, reinforcing connections to heritage while addressing modern challenges.
These efforts resonate with previous discussions highlighting Ratu Tevita as a unifying figure devoted to enhancing governance and collaboration between local traditions and governmental initiatives. The Lau community stands ready to seize opportunities for growth and resilience as they work together to uphold their cultural values and create a promising future under refreshed leadership.
