Ratu Sukuna Bowl Turns Rugby Rivalry Into a Call to Fight Drugs and HIV

As enthusiasm grows for the upcoming Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl, the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Force (RFMF) are leveraging this annual event to foster community unity and increase awareness of vital social issues. This year’s theme, “United for Victory, Stronger Together against Drugs and HIV,” emphasizes a message that transcends the typical rugby rivalry.

SSP Wate Vocevoce, the Police Rugby Team Manager and Director of Operations, highlighted that the event serves as more than just a competition. “It is an opportunity to engage communities, particularly in the fight against drugs and in enhancing community ownership and police collaboration,” he stated. Vocevoce stressed that addressing the increasing challenges of drug abuse and HIV requires strong partnerships and public awareness initiatives.

This sentiment was echoed during the official launch by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the RFMF, who emphasized the event’s broader implications. “It’s not merely about winning or losing; it’s about the spirit we share in our forces and what we can achieve for the future of Fiji,” Kalouniwai remarked. He noted ongoing reconciliation efforts within the RFMF and acknowledged the serious drug challenges faced by the Fiji Police Force.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew reinforced the importance of the event’s theme in combating drug-related issues. He proclaimed that Nasova remains the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl and expressed eagerness for the Police to defend their title. The police had retained the trophy last year after a draw, with a score of 11-11.

Vodafone Fiji’s Chief Commercial Officer, Salman Khan, highlighted the nation’s fervor for rugby, stating that this event brings disciplined forces together, promoting values of camaraderie, integrity, and rivalry. He encouraged athletes to embody these principles during the competition.

The Ratu Sukuna Bowl is set to include 15 sports this year, showcasing not only rugby but various athletic disciplines that aim to unite the community and draw attention to pressing social issues. The event is tentatively scheduled for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, coinciding with a range of other sporting activities throughout the week. The initiative reflects a hopeful commitment to tackling social challenges, building a stronger, drug-free nation, and reinforcing community ties through sport.
