As excitement builds for the upcoming Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl, the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Force (RFMF) are seizing this annual occasion to promote community cohesion and raise awareness about critical social issues. This year’s event theme, “United for Victory, Stronger Together against Drugs and HIV,” highlights a message that reaches beyond traditional rugby competition.
SSP Wate Vocevoce, manager of the Police Rugby Team and Director of Operations, emphasized that the event is about more than just athletic performance. “It provides an opportunity for communities to engage, especially in the fight against drugs and to enhance collaboration between the public and the police,” he explained. Vocevoce noted that tackling the escalating issues of drug abuse and HIV requires robust partnerships and effective public awareness campaigns.
This sentiment was echoed during the official launch by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the RFMF, who shared the event’s significance. “It’s not just a matter of winning or losing; it’s about the collective spirit of our forces and what we can accomplish for the future of Fiji,” Kalouniwai stated. He acknowledged the ongoing reconciliation initiatives within the RFMF and the serious drug challenges currently facing the Fiji Police Force.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew reiterated the importance of the event’s focus in addressing drug-related issues. He affirmed that Nasova is still the rightful home for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl and expressed enthusiasm for the Police’s attempt to defend their title. Last year, the police maintained their championship status after a draw, ending the match with a score of 11-11.
Salman Khan, Chief Commercial Officer of Vodafone Fiji, underscored the nation’s passion for rugby, noting that the event fosters unity among disciplined forces and promotes values such as camaraderie, integrity, and sportsmanship. He encouraged athletes to embrace these ideals during the competition.
This year’s Ratu Sukuna Bowl will feature 15 sports, showcasing not only rugby but various athletic events geared toward uniting the community and highlighting urgent social matters. The event is tentatively scheduled for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, coinciding with a series of other sporting activities throughout the week. This initiative reflects a hopeful commitment to addressing social challenges, building a resilient and drug-free nation, while reinforcing community ties through the spirit of sport.
